Chapter 08 · Endurance

Ironman

140.6 miles in a single day. The boss fight of endurance hobbies — defeated.

Ironman is what happens when the marathon stops being scary. A 2.4-mile open-water swim, 112 miles on the bike, then a full marathon — all before midnight. Signing up was the easy part.

Training stacked every previous chapter: lifting built the engine, the marathon taught the pacing, and freediving (which came after, ironically) would have helped with the swim panic. The day itself went right, went sideways, and went right again — the full report is in the journal.

One is done. The voice asking “but what about a faster one?” has been told to wait its turn behind the table saw.
